Welcome! Terra Nova Omega-3 Seal Oil is a top-quality brand of seal oil produced in Newfoundland. Seal Oil is unique in that it offers DPA, a form of Omega-3 rarely found in fish oils. We have regular-sized bottles (120s) as well as large bottles (240s). I look forward to serving you!
Omega-3 has been extensively studied when it comes to its effect on heart health. Seal oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, and in many ways may be preferential to fish oil. The Omega-3 in seal oil can divided into DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), and DPA (docosahexaenoic acid). Atlantic harp seal oil contains high amounts of each of these omega-3s.
So how is the omega-3 found in seal oil beneficial for our hearts?
According to the Mayo Clinic, Omega-3 fatty acids may benefit heart health by:
Additionally, according to an article on Medline Plus (https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000767.htm), omega-3s “slow the buildup of plaque in your arteries.”
People are familiar with the benefits of omega-3, but is there anything that makes seal oil unique?
But what makes seal oil better than fish oil? One key ingredient in seal oil which may really make it a superior version of omega-3 supplement is DPA. DPA can be found in some types of fish oil, but very few. In fact, most sources will say that DPA in supplements is quite rare. In this video, Jim Stoppani, Ph.D. talks about how rare it is to find DPA in a fish oil supplement. Now, in the video he goes on to promote a particular supplement himself, but you can view the first part to get a good idea. Having said that, DPA IS in fact found in seal oil.
On the healthline website where they discuss omega-3 supplements, there is an interesting part which says:
Mammalian omega-3 oil is made from seal blubber and is in the form of natural triglycerides.
In addition to EPA and DHA, it also contains relatively high amounts of docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), an omega-3 fatty acid with several potential health benefits. Mammalian omega-3 oil is also exceptionally low in omega-6 (18Trusted Source).
It is interesting to note that the article does not talk about any other sources of DPA besides mammalian sources.
So what is so good about DPA when it comes to heart health?
According to an article by Alex Byelashov, Ph.D. on https://www.naturalproductsinsider.com/heart-health/dpa-rise, a Harvard study which involved more than 30,000 patients showed higher plasma concentrations of DPA were associated with lower risk of heart attack.
A case-control study on peripheral arterial disease found that plasma levels of DPA related inversely to blocked arteries (Leng).
According to Simon C. Dyall, “there is evidence that n-3 DPA possesses 10-fold greater endothelial cell migration ability than EPA, which is important in wound-healing processes.” (Found on National Institutes of Health website: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4404917/)

Terra Nova Omega-3 Seal Oil has been around for around 30 years. Starting in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, Terra Nova gained a reputation for producing a very high quality of seal oil. The reputation soon spread and Terra Nova Seal Oil is loved by Canadians all across the country. Terra Nova is made in South Dildo, Newfoundland & Labrador and was formerly produced in Corner Brook, NL.
What makes Terra Nova unique?
Omega-3 supplements come in many shapes and sizes from fish oil to plant-based oil. Terra Nova Seal Oil is unique for various reasons. For one thing, Terra Nova seal oil is produced from harp seals found off the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador. When you buy our product, you know exactly where it comes from. This is unique when compared to most fish oils which typically use a variety of cheap fish harvested from all over the world using various methods. You know when you buy Terra Nova, you are getting top quality. All processing is done in the province.
Where is Terra Nova Available?
Terra Nova Omega-3 Seal Oil has been available at different places throughout its history. Most recently it could be found in Sobeys, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Costco. This is an indicator of the quality of the product. Costco, for example, is renowned for always offering the highest-quality products such as food and supplements. Their idea is to offer fewer choices but to only choose the best brands. That’s why they chose Terra Nova.
At this point, Terra Nova Seal Oil is no longer available in retail stores and can only be purchased online. We continue to provide the same product and the same high quality that you have come to expect! Our product is shipped out via Xpresspost so if you are in Canada, you should get it very quickly.
WHO and HHS say 250mg to 500mg of a combination of EPA and DHA are recommended daily.
Seal oil contains EPA, DHA, but also DPA. If you are looking at just the EPA and DHA, a seal oil capsule contains 79mg of both, so that means around 3 to 6 capsules per day. When you include DPA, the minimum would be less.
These are minimum, not maximum recommendations. The manufacturer of these capsules recommends ingesting 4 to 8 capsules per day.
An important question people need to ask is, how much omega-3 does one need in one's diet?
It's important to realize there are many types of omega-3. There's DHA, EPA, DPA, ALA, and others. Ultimately the human body needs at least DHA and EPA. From these other types, such as DPA can be produced. However, it is important to note that taking DPA directly, rather than receiving it in a converted form from the others is preferable.
So back to the original question, how much do you need?
The WHO and the Department of Health and Human Services both recommend adults receive between 250 and 500mg of a combination of DHA and EPA each day. How many seal oil capsules does this entail? Well, each capsule contains a combined total of 79mg of DHA and EPA. However, this does not include DPA. So even from a conservative point of view, it would be recommended to ingest around 4 to 7 capsules per day. However, if you also include DPA in the total, then you're looking at more like 3 to 5 capsules per day. By the way, this is to achieve the minimum amount. Terra Nova Seal Oil Capsules indicate a recommended amount of 1 to 2 capsules 2 to 4 times per day. This is a big range, but is anywhere from 2 to 8 capsules in a day, which roughly fits the recommendations from these organizations.
As mentioned in other articles on this site, DPA is a very valuable yet rarely found type of omega-3 which has huge potential health benefits. Although the human body can convert DHA and EPA into DPA, from the material I have seen, it is best to receive it from a direct source.
I would also like to briefly mention the ALA form of omega-3. The body cannot directly use ALA as a source of omega-3 and will only convert it at a rate of about 5-15%, depending on what source you get your information from. In this regard, it is much less valuable source of omega-3. How do you know the difference? Well, virtually all vegetarian forms of omega-3 come from ALA, include walnuts, flax, hemp, and other seeds and nuts. The only exception from what I can find is algae which does contain DHA and EPA directly.
Bottom line is you should get at least 250 to 500 mg of omega-3 each day, and it's best to get them directly from DHA, EPA, and DPA.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids are exogenous essential fatty acids which means the body needs them and cannot produce them on its own. Here is a list of benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. Terra Nova Omega-3 Seal Oil capsules contain omega-3, however, many of the studies conducted on omega-3 has been in relation to its presence in the diet from food and not from supplements. Please always consult your healthcare professional before deciding on any health regimen.
Here is a selection of videos pertaining to the health benefits of omega-3. They primarily address fish oil as seal oil is much less commonly sold. One reason for this lower availability is that seal oil is not permitted in the large US market. Many people believe that seal oil is a superior source of omega-3, particularly as it contains DPA, an omega-3 rarely found in fish oil. However, these videos still provide valuable information with regards to omega-3 and can be helpful as a source of information on the subject. Enjoy!

Health Benefits of Omega-3:
There are many other health benefits enumerated on the clevelandclinic.org, which is the source of this information.
Believe it or not, it is actually rather difficult to find a source of Omega-3 that is completely Canadian. Terra Nova Seal Oil, on the other hand, is a source of omega-3 that is sourced and manufactured in Canada. This may not sound very unique, but it really is. Let me explain.
Most of the omega-3 fish oils that exist on the market contain fish that are not harvested in Canadian waters. In fact, most of the time they come from waters outside of North America. The main fish you will find being used in the production of fish oil are anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and sometimes tuna. Few of these species come from North American waters.
Therefore, the sourcing of the fish used in fish oils rarely comes from Canadian waters specifically. If you find one, I would love to hear about it. But what about the manufacture of various fish oils? Is that done in Canada? The answer is sometimes, but not often.
Canada is the home of some manufacturing of fish oil, but it’s also not as common as you may suspect. The fish that is caught for omega-3 production is often sent to the USA or other countries around the world to be turned into a consumable product. There are Canadian manufacturers, but you have to be very certain to verify this before purchasing - it is often not obvious.
Then we come to seal oil. The Atlantic harp seals used in the manufacture of Terra Nova Seal Oil come from the northern waters surrounding Newfoundland and Labrador. 100% of the seals used in the production of this omega-3 oil come from these seals. There are seal harvests in other parts of the world such as Norway and parts of Africa, but these seals are never used in seal oil manufacture in Newfoundland.
Not only are the seals sourced in the province and surrounding areas (possibly the Quebec border with Newfoundland), but the full manufacturing process takes place in Newfoundland, Canada also. There are a couple of seal oil processing facilities in the province, located in Corner Brook, South Dildo, and possibly others.
Seal oil brands other than Terra Nova are manufactured outside of Newfoundland as well, such as in Quebec.
Overall, when you purchase Terra Nova Omega-3 Seal Oil you can be assured that the entire process is thoroughly Canadian. You know exactly what you are getting and where you are getting it from. Trust the quality of Terra Nova Omega-3.
Seal Oil has a ratio of Omega-3:Omega-6 of 7.5:1. This is very important. The average diet has far too much Omega-6 in it. Although Omega-6 is a necessary exogenous nutrient that we cannot produce on our own just like Omega-3, the fact is that most people are getting far too much omega-6 when compared to omega-3. In fact, the average person's diet contains 15 units of omega-6 for every 1 unit of omega-3. Many experts recommend a ratio of 4:1 Omega-6:Omega-3. Well if it's 15:1 and you need it to be 4:1, what do you do? A great way to increase the amount of omega-3 in ones diet is through seal oil capsule supplements which have a very high ratio of omega-3:omega-6 which will help put you back in balance.
